Non-Profit organization geared to help encourage children, teenagers and young adults
Sword of the Spirit Outreach Ministries Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that wants to provide aide to elementary students by providing them uniforms, school supplies, socks, underwear, and shoes. At the same time during the holidays, we would like to buy toys for the youth and provide traditional trimmings during the holiday season. Many families may not be able to provide for their children and that is where we step in to be of assistance.
Sword of the Spirit Outreach Ministries would like to assist with graduating high school students with graduation expenses. Their grade point average must be 3.0 or better to qualify for the student aide. We are focusing on those who have deceased parents or single parents, or in a low-income bracket. We would like to be a blessing to them and their families by providing traditional trimmings for the holiday season. Teenagers are usually not the center of attention during the holiday season if they have younger siblings so often they do not get as many gifts as the younger kids do. Therefore, our organization wants to be a blessing to the older kids in the family as well as the young ones.
The organization would like to aid college students with a 3.0 grade point average with tuition costs, supplies, housing, clothing, and food. The organization would like to open up a housing structure that would house youth that are making that transition into adulthood and have nowhere to live; perhaps their parents are deceased, or simply abandoned. I would like to name the facility Latarjah’s Place. That is my name but it is what my name means that stands out “Friend of God,” and that is what this organization is all about being a friend in a time of need.
Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
The organization was founded in 2001, we have been in business since 2004, 13 years now.
What is your primary product or service?
We encourage single parents, young children, teenagers and young adults to continue their education. In that process we assist with donated resources so they will not have to worry about their basic needs which allows them to focus more on studying and completing their education.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I became interested in what I am doing because of my struggle as a single parent of three children. My motivation for developing this organization was due purely because I was hard working single parent who did not make enough income to supply the needs of my family. I felt with an education and a degree behind me I could do much better providing for my family. Therefor I encourage other young adults to pursue their education.
Some of the heartaches, disappointments, and trials I have endured over the years would have not been as rough if I had finished school and established a career path. Childten ar expensives and every now in then you need help. I want to be that bridge of help in the community with those who want and desire an education.
Everything that I went through, I was determined to finish my education. I am proud to say after 21 years I graduated from the University of Phoenix with a degree in Business Administration on September 17, 2011. I am a poduct of my own ministry. Determination is the key.
My trials and tribulations have made me an advocate to help young mothers and youth obtain their education. It is hard when there is one parent raising children on one income that does not meet the need. I want to assist disadvantage youth who have dreams, goals, and aspirations to accomplish their goals as well as encourage single parents if they have not finished shcool to do so!
I want to give back to the community by offering a source of encouragement, support and share what I have learned over the years to those who think that they can not go back to school. With God anything is possible!
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We are extremely driven by the Spirit of God first of all. Second, the first hand experience drives us to do what we do. We know what it is like not to have to to be without certain resources for basic living. Another reason is that we are willing to take on a lifetime assignment to make sure individuals obtain their education. Everyone deserves an education and no one should be left behind because of their color, race, ethnic background, economical or social status.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
At this present time I am operating out of my home until we secure a affordable and or a donated housing. Certainly we would like to expand. We would love to have locations in in the north, south, east, and west parts of Houston.
