Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
We registered Compass Instruments in 1991.
We changed to Compass Instruments, LLC in 2011.
What is your primary product or service?
We have a standard product line of signal converters and DC/DC converters.
We have various control and data logging systems for oil/gas well stimulation equipment.
We provide OEM electronics and do contract manufacturing.
We do all the electronic instrumentation repairs for Baker Hughes pressure pumping districts nation wide.
We provide design services, from PCB layout to electronic packaging to full system design, including design for hazardous areas if needed.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I was in communications in the USAF. I then worked as an engineer in microelectronic hybrid circuits for a number of years. Was engineering manager for a company making flow measurement equipment for 10 years. Then worked as a senior engineer for an oil/gas well service company for 17 years, designing their control systems for several well stimulation ships and for their entire land based stimulation fleet. So I have a broad knowledge of electronics and understand the need for rugged designs and simple operation.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Few other firms (if any) have the experience with oil/gas well stimulation equipment that we have. When it comes to contract manufacturing, we have a better understanding of electronics and can do testing and even troubleshooting and repairs of field failures.
Because of the background we have in hybrid circuits, we have maintained a keen interest in state-of-the-art electronics. So our standard products utilize the latest technology making them more efficient, stable, and are designed to operate over a wide temperature range.
We specialize in electronic instrumentation that other companies do not provide.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Our main office, electronics instrumentation design and manufacturing, and our sheet metal fabrication shop are all located at 321 S. Persimmon Street in Tomball, TX. We offer NEMA 4X / IP65 aluminum and stainless steel enclosures. Our newest project is an over pressure shutdown system for high pressure pumps with two millisecond shut down time that virtually eliminates over pressure conditions. This new patented system also shuts down based on rate of increase in pressure and provides a considerably more accurate and stable output.
Provide detailed directions to your location
We are just off FM2920 on the east side of Tomball, near Baker Hughes.
What type of payments do you accept?
Checks, credit cards and net 30 for qualified companies.
Which areas do you service?
USA, although we have limited international sales.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Joe Wilson
What are your hours of operation?
8AM to 5PM
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
That our equipment not only works right out of the box, but it just keeps on working and doesn't fail.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
